Acting PM commends successful completion of critical Airport upgrade

The Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Communication and Aviation, Hon. Frederick Kologeto, has commended the successful and timely completion of the Honiara International Airport runway and lighting project during a handover ceremony at the airport area today Thursday.

The critical aviation infrastructure improvement project funded by the World Bank through the Solomon Islands Road and Aviation Project (SIRAP2) was undertaken by the China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG) and the Egis Group for onsite supervision.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Kologeto highlighted that the project is vital for the enforcement of International Civil Aviation Safety requirements in the country.

The completion of the project now equips the Honiara International Airport with modern navigational aids and security fencing, and lighting to ensure the highest standards of safety and security.

The runway upgrades include the entire runway overlaid with new asphalt concrete, a modern airfield ground lighting system (energy-efficient approach lights), and Runway Safety Areas at both ends of the runway.

Hon. Kologeto said the project fulfills the reigning Government for National Unity and Transformation’s key goal to provide aeronautical safety and secure aerodromes to the traveling public, ground and air operators in Solomon Islands for all weather conditions.

The Acting Prime Minister commended the World Bank for funding the project and the contractor (CRCEG) for the successful and timely completion of the project, which is set to enhance the aviation sector.
