Ata’a communities in North Malaita have received 47 easy-to-use cooking stoves yesterday.
Thanks to the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) “Strogem Waka lo Community for Kaikai” (SWoCK) project for making this possible.
SWoCK Project Coordinator based at Ata’a, Mike Tago told SIBC News today the stoves are easy-to-use and can last for up to five years.
He says though they look so simple, the stoves are effective.
“They look so simple but are more effective in the sense that you can only use small sticks to cook and timing it on my watch, it took less than 10 minutes to boil water and that’s the most interesting part of it, so since yesterday up until today people have left cooking over old irons but are now suing the stoves for cooking so everyone is proud that even now they are cooking with the stoves.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Tago says the stoves are donated as an alternative to sustainably manage their mangroves.
“So this is selected for the time when we will do mangrove planting and managing our mangroves so as not to use them for firewood, so the stoves were designed for that time.”
