Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a SBD56 million education support package for Solomon Islands, aimed at improving primary education, strengthening vocational training, and expanding access to learning.
The funding was announced during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Matthew Wale in Honiara on Tuesday, following bilateral talks with Prime Minister Mathew Wale.
Mr Albanese said the package supports the Solomon Islands Government’s education priorities and reflects Australia’s ongoing commitment to the country’s long-term development.
The initiative will provide new books for every primary school student, upgrade rural training centres across the country, and support efforts to increase access to education.
“Today, I am very pleased to announce a 56 million Solomon dollars package of education support for Solomon Islands,” Mr Albanese said.
“This will provide new books for every child in primary school, upgrade rural training centres to equip Solomon Islanders with skills for the future, and support the government’s efforts to expand access to education.”
He added that the package aligns with the Solomon Islands Government’s policies and reinforces Australia’s commitment to supporting the education sector.
Mr Albanese said Australia has made the Pacific a priority since his government took office in 2022 and continues to strengthen its partnerships across the region.
He said the education package forms part of Australia’s broader cooperation with Solomon Islands, focused on supporting national development and creating opportunities for its people.
The announcement comes as both leaders reaffirm their commitment to deepen bilateral ties, including progressing negotiations on a new comprehensive treaty and strengthening cooperation in education, security, and economic development.
