Australia supports Solomon Islands Director of Public Prosecution with ICT equipment

Australia is pleased to hand over critical information and communications technology equipment to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to carry out its mandate to deliver an independent, fair and effective prosecution service.

Australian High Commission officials on Thursday provided six new computers and three printers to the ODPP, as part of the Solomon Islands Australia Partnership for Justice, for use in Gizo, Kirakira and Auki provincial offices.

Australia’s program supports agencies across the justice sector and assists the Solomon Islands Government to improve law and order in Solomon Islands. This includes strengthening the ability of the ODPP to fulfill its mandate to maintain and contribute toa safe and just Solomon Islands.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Andrew Kelesi received the equipment, saying “on behalf of the ODPP Solomon Islands, I wish to thank the government and the people of Australia for their generosity in their ongoing support to the ODPP and the justice sector. The assistance is important but timely as well. The computers and the printers will enhance the ODPP’s service to the people of Malaita, Makira and Western province in their pursuit for justice”.

Australian High Commission Governance First Secretary Sara Lailey acknowledged “a strong justice sector underpins stability, security and development, which is why Australia is Solomon Islands number one partner and is supporting Solomon Islands justice sector agencies through our program”.

She added “public prosecutors perform a crucial role in the justice system and Australia is proud to be supporting the Director, Mr Andrew Kelesi, and his team, with new equipment to continue their important work, including ensuring access to justice in the provinces”.
