AUSTRALIAN HIGH COMMISSION DONATES TO AREATA WOMEN

The Australian High Commission has donated a 48-thousand dollars project to the Niu Areata Weaving and sewing project for women in Weather Coast, South Guadalcanal.

The project is the assistance from the Australian Government through the Australian High Commission’s Direct Assistance Program to help improve the lives of Solomon Islanders.

Speaking during the handing over in Weather Coast, Second Australian High Commission Secretary Ben O’Reilly said the Australian Government is committed to helping improve the lives of Solomon Islanders.

Mr O’Reilly said the Direct Aid program aims to address hard life faced by women as well as areas of greater need for people in the rural communities.

The project provides sewing machines and clothing materials for women to share skills and raise more income.

Meanwhile, Women Representative, Jean Pitchu said the project was already a success since its completion in their community.

She adds, the project had taught Weather Coast Women how to sew clothes, which are later sold at markets for small profits and children having new school uniforms.
