A workshop on the Convention on Biological Diversity has empowered participants with traditional knowledge and customary sustainable practices.
The two-day workshop ended on Friday at the Commonwealth Youth Program Conference Room in Honiara.
The workshop wanted to improve the capacity of indigenous people and local communities in terms of traditional knowledge and sustainable practices.
Workshop Facilitator, Dr. Samson Viulu told SIBC News, the workshop also gave communities and resource owners knowledge on how to conserve resources, and benefit from them.
“The aim is we want as much as possible the resource people to be the beneficiaries than outsiders coming in to exploit their resources and when I say resource people, usually our indigenous people are the resource people, the local communities, the original people of a particular village. That’s what we want to do.”
The Convention on Biological Diversity Workshop brought together up to 35 participants and was facilitated by the Network of the Indigenous Peoples of Solomon Islands.
