China provides SBD 500,000 in Humanitarian Assistance to Solomon Islands following Cyclone Maila

The People’s Republic of China (PRC) handed over to the National Disaster Management Office an amount of 500,000 SBD in humanitarian assistance to the Solomon Islands to support relief efforts following the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Maila.

Over the past several weeks, Tropical Cyclone Maila brought severe weather conditions across the nation, with Western and Choiseul Provinces experiencing the most significant impacts.

Preliminary reports indicate widespread damage to homes, community infrastructure, and food gardens, as well as the disruption of essential services.

In response to the hardships caused by the disaster, PRC is providing these funds specifically for the purchase and transportation of daily necessities, including rice and tents, to assist affected communities.

“We admire the people of Solomon Islands’ courage and resilience in the face of such challenges,” a statement from PRC noted, emphasizing that the two nations are “good friends”.

Acknowledging the assistance Minister responsible for Disaster Management in the country Hon Trevor Manemahaga said the government is grateful for the assistance and will ensure that the money goes towards rebuilding the lives of communities affected by the recent TC Maila.

This latest contribution follows a history of solidarity, including Chinese humanitarian assistance provided during the COVID-19 pandemic and following the 2022 earthquake in the Solomon Islands.

PRC remains committed to standing with the Solomon Islands during this difficult time, expressing confidence that through joint efforts, the nation will overcome these challenges and successfully rebuild its homeland.
