The Democratic Coalition for Change Government will develop the country’s first ever National Urbanisation Policy.
Governor General Sir Frank Kabui announced the policy when he delivered the Speech from the Throne in Parliament last week.
The policy’s main objective is to manage and control the rate of urbanisation in urban centres.
Sir Frank said the policy intends to buy land from tribal landowners to expand town boundaries and create more economic opportunities for our local people.
“It is the intention of this policy that outright purchase of land from tribal landowners will expand town boundaries, create more economic opportunities for our local people and resettle our people who are affected by climate change.”
The Governor General also said a different attitude towards land is vital to encourage the socio-economic development and foster high standards of living for people.
“In order to encourage socio-economic development and foster high standards of living of our peoples we need to change our attitude towards land and adopt a true Melanesian fighting spirit with a changed mindset to convert our idle land into productive assets to gain better livelihoods for all our peoples in the country.”
