The recent bad weather has taught a thing or two about the perils of climate change to the coastal residents of North Malaita.
SIBC’s North Malaita stringer, John Andrew Kiri says residents in the region have expressed concerns over what they described as unusual waves along the coastline, which destroyed stonewalls built to withstand strong waves.
But he says this gave a signal to people that they should move further inland to safety.
“What we’ve seen and witnessed in terms of the damage caused by the high swells has given a strong signal to those living close to the coast to make a wise decision and move to safety inland so as not to cause any risk or regrets as vulnerable small islands states as Solomon Islands are vulnerable to the world’s changing weather and the effects of climate change.”
SIBC News understands the recent bad weather had caused infrastructure damage to some communities in the country.
