A former Member of the country’s first parliament Faneta Sira has called on the new Members of Parliament to elect a Prime Minister according to the interest of the people.
Mr Sira told SIBC News, elected MPs should vote according to the needs of the people as the government is meant to represent the people of this country.
“I’d like us to vote according to what the people like and for who they want because the democracy we are in today government is by the people as well as for the people.”
The former MP adds, in his days in parliament, MPs did not lobby but discuss national issues around a table – keeping people’s interest as their top priority.
“In our time things went peacefully and were done according to agreement, we sat down together talking in the Melanesian way until we reach an agreement before we can bring it to parliament, even to vote for a new Prime Minister. During our time, we all reason together and ask ourselves as to who we want to elect as the Prime Minister, not forgetting views of the public.”
Mr Sira appeals on the public to respect the process of electing a new Prime Minister next week.
