Four telecommunication towers under SINBIP commissioned in Choiseul province

The Solomon Islands National Broadband Infrastructure Project (SINBIP), funded by the Government of the People’s Republic of China and implemented by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) and Huawei, successfully commissioned four telecommunication towers – Varuga, Kadova, Lengatura and Zaru – in East and South Choiseul on 20 January 2026, increasing the total number of operational communication towers to 64.

Confronted with hurdles including challenging terrain in Choiseul Province, arduous long-haul material transportation via both sea and land routes, and intricate on-site coordination, the CHEC project team forged close collaboration with local authorities and communities. 

Through concerted efforts, the team overcame logistical bottlenecks and environmental challenges to deliver the towers and bring them into full operational service.

The commissioning of these towers will substantially upgrade network coverage and signal quality across Choiseul, providing local residents with stable mobile and broadband services. 

This will not only enhance daily communications and strengthen connectivity with other provinces, but also boost local residents’ participation in social and economic activities. 

Moreover, the new infrastructure will facilitate the delivery of critical public services, equipping local schools and government offices to provide improved education and healthcare in previously underserved areas.

Furthermore, the towers will catalyze local economic development by enabling the rollout of digital services, thereby bridging the digital divide and laying a solid foundation for Solomon Islands’ long-term social and economic growth, as well as for the continuous improvement of people’s quality of life.

Building on the project’s current implementation progress, CHEC will continue to deploy more communication towers under SINBIP, further integrating the connectivity of provinces and islands across the Solomon Islands.
