Government reaffirms careful, evidence-based approach to Federal System Proposal

Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele MP, has reaffirmed the Government for National Unity and Transformation, GNUT’s commitment to a careful, responsible, and evidence-based approach in considering the proposed Federal System of Government.

Winding up the Sine Die motion in Parliament yesterday, Prime Minister Manele acknowledged the historical aspirations of the people of Solomon Islands while emphasising the Government’s constitutional responsibility to ensure any major reform serves the long-term interests of the nation.

“The proposed federal system represents a significant constitutional and governance reform with far-reaching implications for national unity, fiscal sustainability, service delivery, and political stability,” the Prime Minister stressed.

He informed Parliament that GNUT is currently undertaking a detailed cost-benefit analysis to assess the financial, administrative, and developmental impacts of the federal system. This analysis aims to provide a clear understanding of the affordability and practicality of such a transition.

Prime Minister Manele noted that the findings of the cost-benefit analysis will guide future consultations with provincial governments, key stakeholders, and the wider public.

This process will ensure that any decision taken is grounded in facts, informed by evidence, and aligned with the best interests of our nation.

The Prime Minister said, his government remains committed to inclusive dialogue and transparent decision-making as it continues to assess the proposed reform and its implications for the future governance of the country.
