A ground breaking ceremony for the Honiara Port Expansion Project may take place as soon as the end of this month.
This follows the signing of a major contract agreement to begin construction work on the project has been signed between the Solomon Islands Government and a Japanese joint-venture in Tokyo, Japan.
Permanent Secretary for Infrastructure Development Moses Virivolomo signed the agreement with TOA-KITANO JV officials last month.
The Honiara Port Expansion project, worth around US$23 million, aims to reduce ship turn around and improve safety by construction of a 150 meter new international berth for Honiara.
The project also includes improving the pavement for container handling and storage areas.
Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary for Infrastructure Development says this project when completed will allow the Solomon Islands Ports Authority to safely and effectively manage the increased activity at the Honiara Port.
Mr Virivolomon also said when the project is completed there will be improved vessel turnaround, reduced time and cost of trade, and Honiara Port will be promoted as an efficient port in our part of the world.
The contractor TOA-KITANO JV is expected in Honiara soon.
