HCC relocate cloth vendors to Kukum market for safer and legal trading

The Honiara City Council (HCC) Executive House has officially approved the allocation of the Kukum Market as the new trading space for all cloth vendors selling clothes in the Firehouse area.

This decision was made during its meeting on 13 November 2025 and aims to ensure that small business operators have a proper, legal, and well-organised space to run their income-earning activities.

The approval follows the closure of the Firehouse area in Point Cruz, where numerous clothing vendors had previously operated. 

The Council earlier ordered the closure and demolition of the Firehouse site after confirming that it was operating without a valid market permit, making its activities illegal under HCC regulations.

After assessing the situation and considering the need to support affected vendors, the Council identified Kukum Market space as the most suitable and lawful location. The site offers better facilities, improved cleanliness, and easier access for both traders and customers.

The HCC governance will work closely with the Market Authority to assist with the relocation process, including stall allocation and guidance on market rules. 

Vendors are encouraged to cooperate, maintain cleanliness, and follow regulations to create a safe and healthy market environment.
