A high-level conference on women’s leadership and political participation to inform electoral reforms in Solomon Islands begins tomorrow.
The conference has brought in political, government and church leaders from around the region to Honiara, including a woman Member of Parliament in Fiji – the Honorable Salote Radrodro.
The conference is a preparatory event for two significant electoral reforms – the Political Parties Integrity Act and the Electoral Provisions Act.
It is intended to offer an opportunity to Solomon Islands stakeholders and experts from other Pacific Island countries to engage in in-depth dialogue on how best to increase women’s participation and representation in leadership and politics.
Recommendations from this conference are expected to be included among the reforms of these two Acts.
The reforms are mainly to make the overall legislative framework inclusive, fairer and more equitable – this will provide a platform to increase participation and representation in Parliament.
The conference is led by the Political Parties Commission of Solomon Islands with support from the European Union and the United Nations Development Programme.
