Isabel Provincial Government Hands Over the New Ablution Block at Guguha Health Facility

The Isabel Provincial Government (IPG), with funding support from European Union through UNDP´s Provincial Governance and Service Delivery project handed over to the Guguha community, a transforming initiative to address the long-standing sanitation challenges at the school and community health dispensary.

The new ablution block at the Guguha Health Facility is one of the three initiatives funded in 2024 by the PGSD. Recognizing the critical need for proper service delivery at local level, especially sanitation in rural communities, the IPG prioritized three key facilities under the first grant. In addition to Guguha, these included the construction of another ablution block at Jejevo and Furona schools.

The collaborative effort aimed to enhance hygiene standards and provide accessible, high-quality facilities for students, teachers, health workers, patients, and community members.

Provincial Secretary of Isabel Province, Norman Hiropuhi, during the handover ceremony emphasized the importance of these projects: “Sanitation is a fundamental right, and the Isabel Provincial Government is committed to ensuring that all schools and health centers in our province meet basic hygiene standards.

These projects are more than infrastructure upgrades—they represent a commitment to the health, dignity, and well-being of our people.”

The three projects supported by UNDP —valued at a combined total of SBD $485,162.22—are expected to directly benefit more than a thousand individuals in Isabel province, including men, boys, women, and girls, with specific provisions to accommodate people with disabilities..

The implementation of these projects extends beyond physical infrastructure. Community members have been engaged in the construction process, gaining valuable skills and a sense of ownership.

Local workers have learned about construction techniques, materials, and tools, empowering them for future projects. This approach ensures that the communities are not only beneficiaries but also active participants in their development journey.

Feedback from beneficiaries highlights the profound impact of these efforts. School staff and parents have expressed their gratitude, describing the ablution block projects as great improvements long time needed and finally realized. Medical workers and patients at Guguha Clinic have echoed similar sentiments, noting the improved experience the new facilities are bringing.
