Honiara’s Kukum Highway is expected to be fully sealed and paved in June.
Supervising Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development Jimmy Nuake said the Kukum Highway project is currently focused on completing drainage systems and roundabouts along the highway.
That work will take about three months, Mr Nuake said.
Given the current state of the highway, the ministry has engaged local contractors to carry out minor upgrades before the project’s contractors pave the entire road.
“MID doesn’t want to spend too much money on putting it in perfect condition because they will rip up the whole section and put in new pavement,” Mr Nuake said.
“Basically what will happen is that the existing pavement will be ripped up, completely taken out, and then they will rebuild it from the base and put asphalt on top.”
He said the same type of asphalt used on the main Chinatown bridge will be used to to pave the highway.
