The second and final week for the Malango language dictionary development workshop in Belaha has started.
Last week an average of more than twenty community members participated each day in the word-gathering exercise.
After some initial training, the group has been able to collect over 2000 words and hopes to increase that number this week.
The collection of words will be entered into a computer and will eventually form a dictionary of the language.
The hope is that this dictionary can be used in schools, homes, and in Bible translation work in the future.
Participants are enjoying the chance to discuss their language, and are recognizing that it is important to develop their language in written form so that it will not be lost throughout the coming generations.
The Solomon Islands Translation Advisory Group advisor Andrew Van Andel says the workshop is a great start for language development for the communities of Central Guadalcanal.
