The Literacy Network Solomon Islands celebrates ‘International Mother Language Day’ today at the National Museum.
This year’s theme is: ‘Local Languages for Global Citizenship: Spotlight on Science’.
A statement from the Solomon Islands Translation Advisory Group,SITAG, says with 65 languages in the country, organisers would like to see the Solomon Islands language diversity celebrated each year.
Starting at 9am today, SITAG Linguistic Advisor, Karen Ashley will use a technique called a ‘monolingual demonstration’ to show how linguists research and analyse a language.
According to the event’s programme, at 1pm, Edgar Pollard will be speaking on How Local Languages Strengthen Environmental Studies followed by a presentation by Karen Ashley on ‘What is Language.
Participants will also have the opportunity to interact with the presenters and ask questions.
SIBC understands, the official UNESCO date for this event was 21 February.
