Three Asian loggers are recovering after an alleged food poisoning incident last week at Legavana Camp in South Choiseul.
Dicky Clement, Pelo Uping and Lobo Entirong said they feel lucky to have survived the ordeal, which left two of their colleagues dead.
The men cooked a type of cabbage — described as “bush cabbage” in a report to police — with luncheon meat after someone at the camp told them the cabbage was edible.
Five of them became ill soon after they ate the food and were transported to the Posarae health centre in Choiseul Province.
Two of the men died there, and the remaining three were transported to Gizo Hospital in critical condition.
They were discharged from the hospital yesterday.
The men will remain in Gizo for further medical checks before they return to Choiseul Province.
Their colleagues’ bodies were sent to Honiara, and the responsible authorities will make further arrangements to send them home.
In an earlier statement, Supervising Police Provincial Coordinator for Choiseul Province Sergeant Robert Satini said police officers in Choiseul were investigating the incident.
