A week long Biosecurity induction workshop has started in Honiara.
The workshop is organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) for its staff on the new Biosecurity procedures and systems for Solomon Islands.
It is aimed at bringing all MAL staff to the same level of understanding of the Biosecurity Solomon Islands procedures and systems and the reasons behind them, so the same standards are applied by the staff.
Speaking to officially open the workshop today, Undersecretary for Agriculture Oswald Ramo says over the next few weeks and months, Biosecurity Solomon Islands will be introducing the new Biosecurity Act, new regulations, new import specifications and new fee schedules.
He told the workshop participants these will be introduced to them throughout the course so that they are ready to implement them as soon as all the documentation has been developed and distributed.
The Australian Government is funding the workshop, through the Australian Solomon Islands Biosecurity Programme.
This is the third workshop held for 45 staff within the Biosecurity department of the Ministry.
