Minister of Mines and Energy Samson Maneka says he is impressed with the mining plans of Sumitomo and the company’s community engagement in Isabel Province.
Minister Maneka made a one-day official visit to the company’s Cockatoo Camp on Wednesday this week where he was briefed on their integrated plans for nickel mining development in Solomon Islands.
The Minister was also briefed on the extensive community engagement the company has with many communities in Isabel Province.
Following the briefing, Minister Maneka said he is impressed with the company’s mining integration plans for Solomon Islands.
He also says the company had gone beyond its legal obligations to work with local communities during the exploration stage.
The Mines Minister also said he was impressed how serious Sumitomo is to undertake mining rehabilitation after mining.
He said an important legal condition of any mining will be to rehabilitate mining areas after mining.
Minister Maneka was accompanied by his Permanent Secretary, Jeffery Kauha, the Deputy Director of Mines Ishmael Dai, and the in-house legal advisor for the SMMS, Andrew Muaki.
