MONO COMMUNITIES COMMENDED GOV’T DECISION ON AGRO-FORESTRY

Anti Agro-forestry supporters and the people of Mono, Shortland Islands, Western Province have commended recent moves by the Democratic Coalition for Change (DCC) Government to revoke more than 30 Agro-forestry permits across the country.

The DCC Government made the decision as part of its reforms to ensure stricter logging practices in the country as many companies are only using the Exemption Order to fell logs for export, breaching its provisions.

Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare signed the revocation notice when he was the Acting Minister for Forestry and Research.

SIBC stringer for Shortland Islands, John Kotaru reports the Mono communities have saluted the government’s decision.

“The Mono community in Shortland Islands along with the anti Agro-forestry approach in Mono have saluted the government’s decision, especially the Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare for taking and intelligent decision in suspending all Agro-forestry logging in the country.”

Mr. Kotaru adds concerned landowners have also commended the action as it will not only conserve forest resources but also clean up the country’s forestry sector.
