Most traffic accidents occurring in and around Honiara city are alcohol-related, says the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force Kukum Traffic Centre.
About four traffic accidents occurred over the weekend in Honiara alone.
Acting Deputy Director of Traffic Hugo Maelasi says alcohol is the most common cause of traffic accidents nowadays, adding with the breathalyser in operation, a less number of fatal accidents have been recorded.
“The most common cause of accidents happening are a result of alcohol consumption. When we started the breathalyser operation I think it contributes a lot especially in deterring those who intend to drink and drive because when we introduce the tests we have a less number of fatal accidents until now.”
Meanwhile, the acting Deputy Director of Traffic reiterates, driving under the influence of liquor is an offence.
“When you drive I think it’s good not to do so when you take alcohol. If you want to take alcohol leave your vehicle at home and take your drinks at home. If you drink then don’t touch a vehicle because of the moment you take alcohol, it will entice you to go on high speed and do silly things which will lead you to involve in accidents.”
SIBC News understands, the penalties for drink driving are a maximum fine of 10 to 20 thousand dollars, six months imprisonment and a full-time suspension of driving licenses.
