“The proposed amendments are timely and necessary, not only to address gaps and weaknesses identified in the current legislation, but also to provide a stronger legal framework for improving the relationship between the National Government and Provincial Executives in the management of provincial affairs,” Dr. Futaiasi said.
He described the completion of consultations as an important milestone for the Ministry, as the amendments are part of a number of major reform initiatives being progressed by MPGIS.
“This is the first of a number of major reform items we intend to progress, and I am pleased with the conclusion of these consultations. The discussions have been constructive and will help us move the proposed amendments to the next stage,” he said.
Following the consultations, the Ministry will undertake internal processes before submitting the proposed amendments to Cabinet for consideration and endorsement. Subject to Cabinet approval, the amendments will then be transmitted to Parliament for consideration and enactment.
Member of the PMO Legislative and Policy Reform Subcommittee, legal counsel Ronald Dive, also welcomed the outcome.
“We have a list of priority Bills on our agenda, and when Ministries are prepared and ready to progress their reforms, it also helps us to deliver on our mandate,” Mr Dive said.
The completion of the consultations marks another step in the Government’s ongoing legislative and institutional reform programme aimed at strengthening the legal and governance framework of the Solomon Islands and improving cooperation between the National Government and Provincial Governments.
