The National Council of Women says the 26 women who contested the National General Elections must be congratulated and acknowledged.
Council President Ella Kauhue says although 25 of them did not get elected, their hard work and interest to contribute to the political leadership of this country needs to be recognized and acknowledged.
In a statement, Ms Kauhue also said the Council is happy with Temotu-Vatud in their choice to elect their first female Member of
Parliament.
The only woman MP-elect is Freda Tuki is a business woman from Tikopia. She contested and won the elections in Temotu-Vatud,
unseating the incumbent, Clay Forau Soalaoi.
The President of the National Council of Women says the Council expresses gratitude to the people of Vatud constituency for placing their trust and confidence in a woman.
Ms Kauhue also said the National Council of Women encourages the constituency to assist and support their current MP.
She says electing a woman at this time where 49 MPs are male, is a very challenging time.
Meanwhile, the President of the National Council of Women says Freda Tuki’s win is a great result for her supporters as well as for women of this country.
