The Government will convene a National Memorial Service on May 11, in honor of those who died during last month’s flash floods.
A Committee comprising officials from various Government ministries have been set up to organize and draw up a program for the event, which is set to be held at the Saint Barnabas Anglican Cathedral in Honiara.
The Committee is currently gathering information on people who died during the floods from police records and the National Disaster Management Office.
Highlights of the program will include a candle lighting ceremony in honor of the victims and an account from a survivor and laying wreaths.
The memorial service is expected to be attended by high-level dignitaries including the Governor General, the Prime Minister and Diplomats.
The Government is encouraging people in Honiara to attend in solidarity to pay tribute to the flash flood victims who were mainly women and children.
The service will be broadcasted live on the National Radio, SIBC for listeners throughout the country.
At least twenty-two people were confirmed dead following the deadly floods on April 3.
