The Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) has launched the new Emergency Obstetric Care (EmOC) package at the National Referral Hospital.
A statement by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services says this is an effort to save mothers’ lives.
The statement said Emergency Obstetric Care is a package of evidence-based actions and interventions that address the most common causes of maternal death in the country.
Common causes of maternal death in Solomon Islands include; high blood pressure, bleeding after giving birth and labour that takes too long which threatens the life of the mother and unborn baby.
The package also provides updates to health workers about normal deliveries.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services Dr Tenneth Dalipanda says Solomon Islands is losing too many mothers, and many of these deaths can be prevented with strengthened antenatal care.
Emergency Obstetric Care is a package that identifies and addresses health system issues that contribute to maternal deaths.
Dr Sevil Huseynova from the World Health Organisation says, the World Health Organisation has supported the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and is committed to working with the MHMS to roll out Emergency Obstetric Care to the Provinces.
Dr Sevil confirmed the Emergency Obstetric Care will be rolled out to NRH, Malaita and Choiseul this year.
