The Solomon Islands Meteorological Services (SIMS) will next week commission its manned weather station in Tingoa, Rennell Bellona province.
Being the first to be officially commissioned in the province, it will provide vital weather information both for the country, the region, and the world.
Director of Meteorology, David Hiriasia told SIBC News, the importance of establishing a weather station at Tingoa is very obvious.
“I think the importance of establishing a weather station in Tingoa is quite obvious because in the country we know that Rennell and Bellona province is a cyclone-prone area so in terms of cyclone formation we need information on like weather observations to help out in terms of cyclone monitoring and also early warnings in terms of tropical cyclones.”
Mr. Hiriasia says it will also serve Solomon Islands, the region, and the world.
“So the station is situated in a strategic location with regards to cyclone early warning systems so it’s not only for Solomon Islands but regionally as I’ve mentioned and also internationally, data from the Tingoa Met Station will be very important in terms if cyclone formation and tracking as well as the warnings associated with tropical cyclones.
