If Honiara and Guadalcanal achieve a 90 percent full vaccination, Honiara will not have to go into lockdown if a community spread of COVID-19 is detected.
Mr Sogavare said the most vaccine hesitancy in the country has been reported in Honiara and Guadalcanal province.
“I call on all citizens living in Honiara, and Guadalcanal to urgently take your COVID-19 injections. This is because the most likely place for COVID-19 to enter our communities are in Honiara and Guadalcanal,” Sogavare said.
The Prime Minister said if COVID-19 reaches the communities in Honiara, any lockdown will seriously affect the livelihood of people living in our communities and settlements around Honiara.
He adds, access to water and food for daily needs will be very difficult. Therefore, it is crucial that every adult living in communities and settlements around Honiara must be fully vaccinated before any community transmission occurs.
The Prime Minister said the second objective of the government is to drive and keep the economy afloat.
“To achieve this objective, we must reopen our international borders to allow normal trading, business travel and tourism to recommence without quarantine restrictions.”
“However, we cannot reopen our borders for free travel without quarantine restrictions until we have vaccinated at least 90 percent of our target population of 417, 327 people which is 375, 595 people,” says Mr Sogavare.
Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare echoed these statements in his COVID-19 nationwide address yesterday.
