Nurses discuss possible deployment to Vanuatu

Senior executives from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services will meet this Friday to discuss issues surrounding the recruitment of Solomon Islands nurses to work in Vanuatu.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Tautai Kaitu’u Angikimua told parliament yesterday, that earlier this year, Chair of the Vanuatu Public Service Commission visited the Solomon Islands to discuss employing our local nurses in Vanuatu.

“A list of nurses showed that 71 of them were interested to work in Vanuatu,” he said.

“That’s where we stand at the moment, the senior executive are having a meeting this Friday to look into the issue.”

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Manasseh Maelanga reminds the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to seriously consider the shortage of nurses in hospitals and clinics before releasing nurses to Vanuatu.

“All of us have been to the national referral hospital and have seen the hard working nurses attending to patients,” he said.

“I think the committee should think about this first, no one is stopping anyone from going out to work somewhere, its just that we have to think about our people first.”
