However, one month later, the public has not received any update on the progress of this important process.
“The Opposition welcomed the Government’s decision to investigate this matter because it concerns issues of public interest, public revenue and confidence in how our natural resources are managed,” Opposition Leader Hon. Manasseh Sogavare said.
“However, announcing an investigation is only the first step. If the Government is committed to accountability and transparency, Solomon Islanders should be kept informed about the progress of this important process.”
The Opposition is not seeking the release of confidential information or any details that could compromise the integrity of the investigation or any future legal proceedings. However, the public deserves a reasonable update on the status of the investigation.
The Opposition is seeking clarity on:
- Whether the examination of records and documentation relating to the 33 shipments has commenced or been completed;
- Whether relevant government officials and company representatives have been engaged as part of the investigation;
- Whether the Government has identified any outstanding royalties, fees or other obligations that may be owed to the State; and
- The expected timeframe for completion of the investigation.
The Opposition also reiterates the importance of ensuring the investigation is conducted independently, credibly and transparently.
The Office of the Leader of the Opposition previously called on the Government to provide clarity regarding the involvement of Attorney-General Gabriel Suri, including measures taken to address any potential conflicts of interest arising from his previous legal representation of APID before assuming the role of Attorney-General.
The Opposition maintains that appropriate safeguards must be in place to ensure public confidence in the integrity and independence of the investigation.
“The Government has stated that its reform agenda is focused on restoring integrity, improving transparency and protecting the national interest. These commitments must be demonstrated through action.”
“Solomon Islanders deserve confidence that this investigation is progressing properly, that it is independent, and that its findings will be communicated in a timely manner.”
The Opposition acknowledges the Government’s own recognition that the mineral sector has faced longstanding challenges relating to oversight and accountability. Addressing these issues requires matters of significant public interest to be handled transparently, fairly and without unnecessary delay.
