A parent of a Solomon Islander studying in Cuba says the national government must prepare well for its returning medical students from Cuba.
Ishmael Ou’ou made the call after observing that clinics and hospitals across the country are ill-equipped and does not have needed machinery and facilities.
The former secondary school teacher told SIBC News that the Government has almost a hundred medical students in Cuba, with some soon to return and work in the country.
But he says with health facilities not up to standard and expectations, even drawing the highest salary may not be enough.
Mr. Ou’ou says the government has to prepare well for the returning doctors, as the first lot completes studies this year.
“So I want to call on the government to be very careful in planning because the first lot will arrive this year, perhaps they will come this year to serve the country, so we must prepare housing and the hospital as well as the needed equipment so that no one can be sent to Australia again, we have everything at home. This is why I think we must prepare well for our doctors, otherwise we lose them”.
Mr. Ou’ou was speaking to SIBC News in an interview over the weekend.
