The National Parliament of Solomon Islands has a new Deputy Speaker.
He is Member of Parliament for East Are’are, Hon. Andrew Manepora’a.
The position of the Deputy Speaker became vacant after Member of Parliament for Central Honiara Hon. John Moffat Fugui was appointed as the Minister of Education and Human Resources Development last week.
Speaker of Parliament Ajilon Nasiu informed the House that Hon. Manepora’a stood unopposed for the Deputy Speaker’s position.
“I have received Hon. Manepora’a resignation letter as a Party Leader in compliance with Section 64 (d) 4 of the Constitution and a copy of the Party’s acceptance of his resignation as Party Leader. As such, Hon. Andrew Manepora’a stands unopposed for the position of Deputy Speaker, so on behalf of the House and its members I wish to congratulate and welcome our new Deputy Speaker.”
The Speaker is elected by Members of Parliament from outside of Parliament while the Deputy Speaker is elected from among the Members of Parliament.
SIBC News understands the Deputy Speaker performs the Speaker’s role when the Speaker is absent.
