The Solomon Islands National Provident Fund (Amendment) Bill 2018 was passed in Parliament this afternoon.
The Eleven clause bill passed through the Committee of the Whole House with amendments.
The bill aimed to amend the current National Provident Act to create a legal framework for the operation of the ‘YouSave’ Scheme, a new voluntary pension scheme.
Among the nine MPs who debated the general principles of the bill was the East Central Guadalcanal MP and Home Affairs Minister, Ishmael Avui.
Mr. Avui said, women around the country will be the main beneficiaries of the new Act.
Women who sell market produce need some where safe to keep their small daily income.
He warned NPF board not to repeat the failed SMI scheme.
Meanwhile, Aoke Langalanga MP and Bills and Legislation Committee Chair, Mathew Wale said among recommendations from the Bills and Legislation Committee is for NPF to device a tertiary study support scheme to assist families meet school fees.
