PARLIAMENTARY ACCOUNTS SEEKS ADVISE ON TAXING MPs

The Parliamentary Accounts and Administration is preparing to consult the Ministry of Finance, Inland Revenue Division and the Attorney General regarding the course of action to be taken to implement the deduction of tax payment on Members of Parliament salaries contained in the Member of Parliaments’ Commission Amendment Regulations 2015.

This is after the High Court yesterday ruled that most of the amended regulations contained in the Member of Parliaments’ Commission Amendment Regulations 2015, was unconstitutional.

MPs have been enjoying tax-free salaries since April last year under the amended regulations.

But Clerk to Parliament Clezy Rore told SIBC News, his office is inviting Ministry of Finance, Inland Revenue Division and the Attorney General to meet and decide when to implement the deduction of MPs tax payment.

Mr. Rore adds, his office is fully prepared to roll out the High Court ruling on all MPs.

High Court yesterday, struck out most of the amended regulations contained in the Member of Parliaments’ Commission Amendment Regulations 2015, declaring them as unconstitutional.

The case was taken to court by senior citizens Waita Ben Tabusasi, Ruth Liloqula, Tony Hughes and Reverend Mark Graham and M-P for West Makira Hon. Derick Manu’ari on behalf of ordinary Solomon Islanders.
