PM Manele attends memorial ceremonies honoring WWII Heroes

PM Manele laid the wreath honoring the Coastwatchers’ at the Commonwealth Street

82 years ago today, Guadalcanal Island was the scene of the bloodiest warfare as Allied Forces put on the final campaign to end the Japanese invasion of the Pacific.

Yesterday the United States of America (USA) led a memorial ceremony at the Skyline Monument to pay tribute to the valiant men who fought against the then Japanese army. 

Joining the memorial ceremony in the early hours of the morning was the Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele who spoke earnestly about the need to safeguard and protect peace.

Prime Minister Manele urged global leaders to embrace peace over wars adding that the Guadalcanal campaign was enough evidence of the catastrophic nature of war.

The Prime Minister also highlighted if it was not for the brave men, people will not be enjoying the future they have today.  

The Prime Minister paid tribute to both the Allied Forces and local heroes who aided the Allied Forces in the war against the then Japanese army.

He then attended the remembrance ceremony of the Coastwatchers’ at the Commonwealth Street and laid a wreath in homage to those local heroes.

Granddaughter of the most decorated WWII local hero, Sir Jacob Vouza, was given the honor to present the keynote address. 

The memorial services to remember the Allied Forces and Coastwatchers’ are annual events hosted by the United States Embassy in Papua New Guinea together with the Embassy Office here in Honiara.
