PNA REGIONAL WORKSHOP STARTS IN NORO

A two-day regional workshop gathering members of the Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) kicks off in Noro, Western Province tomorrow.

Chairman of the PNA Longline Vessels Day Scheme Technical Working group, Director of Fisheries and Marine Resources Edward Honiwala confirms the regional meeting.

“The workshop is about Longline VDS technical working group which resulted from the recent meeting by PNA officials in Tarawa and so the workshop now is to look at issues and make recommendations to the ministerial meeting later on this year.”

Director Honiwala outlines key issues for discussion in the next two days meeting.

“The most important thing is to look at the economic side of this tool, for instance looking at how we can charge fishing boats. Let’s say we want to set the minimum benchmark price for one day how much we would charge them, so we need the economics and even the operations cost for every vessel so that we can recommend the right minimum benchmark price for implementation.”

Apart from Solomon Islands, participants for the regional gathering are expected from Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Tuvalu and Tokelau.
