Data collected by the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force Statistic Unit on reported cases of domestic violence indicates a lot more women are now coming forward to report the violence they face at home to the police.
Assistant Police Commissioner Gwen Ratu announced at the International Women’s Day breakfast in Honiara yesterday.
She says women are now coming out to report domestic violence cases, adding a lot of these cases are now before the courts.
“Women are now coming out to report domestic violence. Whilst a lot of these cases are reported, some of them are probably still before the courts.”
Ms. Ratu also outlines the number of domestic violence cases reported since 2010.
“In 2010, 581 cases; 2011, 140 cases; 2012, 167 cases; 2013, 33 cases; 2014, 12 and in 2015 there was a significant increase to around 150.”
