The Saqigae community in Ward 6, Northwest Choiseul, warmly welcomed Prime Minister Hon. Matthew Wale and his delegation during a reassurance visit to areas affected by Cyclone Maila in Choiseul Province today.
The Prime Minister, accompanied by seven Cabinet Ministers and government officials, began the visit in the provincial capital of Taro, where the delegation paid a courtesy call on the Choiseul Premier and members of the provincial executive.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Wale reaffirmed his Government for Reform, Empowerment, Accountability and Transformation (GREAT) administration’s commitment to prioritising disaster response and recovery efforts across the country.
While in Saqigae, the Prime Minister met and interacted with community members and witnessed firsthand the extensive damage caused by Cyclone Maila.
Damaged infrastructure, including the community’s primary school, highlighted the severe impact of the cyclone on local residents.
Addressing the community, Prime Minister Wale emphasised that serving the people remains the government’s highest priority, particularly during times of hardship.
“If we did not feel for the people, then we are good for nothing; we are serving ourselves only,” Prime Minister Wale said.
“You are the real boss, the true owners of the government, and that is the reason we are here — to listen to your needs and respond in ways that are appropriate.”
The Prime Minister and his delegation are now travelling to Gizo, where they will continue visiting communities affected by Cyclone Maila in Western Province.
The visits are aimed at strengthening collaboration with provincial leaders, demonstrating the Government’s continued commitment to affected communities, and ensuring the voices of those most impacted are being heard.
