PROPOSED BETEL NUT ORDINANCE READY FOR TABLING

The proposed concept paper for the betel nut Ordinance is ready and will be tabled in the next Full Council meeting.

Chairman of the law Enforcement Division Charles Aiwosuga who will table the concept paper says his standing committee has been working tirelessly to complete the Ordinance.

The Honiara City Council Media Unit reports, the Law Enforcement Division’s standing committee including their legal team have gone through the concept paper and is now ready to be tabled in the next Full Council meeting.

The betel nut ordinance is not to ban the sale of the product but to prohibit the betel nut sales in certain locations within the City.

The statement add there will be satellite markets identified and will be authorized by the Council for the vendors to be stationed in one location, saying this is also to avoid littering and illegal hawking around the City.

Chairman Aiwosuga further acknowledged the new CEO of the Solomon Islands Ports Authority for the new policies implanted which have seen a major improvement in terms of cleanliness at the wharf area.

He also urge every stakeholders, business houses and the public to cooperate in keeping the City clean and to have a safe and healthy environment.

The betel nut ordinance if approved by the Full Council, will be enforced next year.
