Provincial Fisheries officers from all nine Provinces and private sector are attending a National Coastal fisheries and Aquaculture workshop in Honiara.
Opening the workshop, Minister of Fisheries John Maneniaru told participants, he believes coastal fisheries and aquaculture can serve as a socio-economic tool to empower rural communities.
He explains, fisheries officials and stakeholders are responsible to make this happen.
The Minister said whilst the Ministry of Fisheries is mandated to develop measures to manage our fisheries resources, it is equally important that our managed resources contribute to food and nutritional security, better socio-economic standards and business and financial opportunities at the village level.
The Minister further said, it is the policy of the current government to improve the delivery of service to our people in the rural communities, which includes the fisheries services.
The workshop is hosted by the Provincial Fisheries and Inshore Fisheries Divisions of the Ministry of Fisheries with financial support from ‘Mekem Strong Solomon Islands Fisheries’ Programme, an institutional strengthening program to the Ministry by New Zealand.
