“Building on quality education and training, the country needs to develop a workforce of Solomon Islanders, ready for jobs at home and overseas.”
Permanent Secretary for Development Planning and Aid Coordination, Jeremiah Manele made the statement when he launched the National Human Resource Development and Training Plan in Honiara yesterday.
Speaking to officially launch the plan, Mr. Manele said the large and growing population of young people in the country need employment opportunities.
He adds, seven out of ten Solomon Islanders are under the age of 29.
He said the government recognizes the importance of a coordinated national action to support better employment prospects for the youth.
But Mr. Manele adds, to achieve the longer-term national development strategy and medium-term development plan, Solomon Islands must supply skills needed by employers and others.
“To achieve the longer-term national development strategy and the medium-term development plan and grow our country sustainably, Solomon Islands must supply skills needed by employers and by available economic opportunities. The success of major new economic initiatives and projects, lies on Solomon Islanders being able to fully participate in them. In addition, Solomon Islanders need to be equipped with skills to grow their own economic livelihoods”.
SIBC News understands the National Human Resource Development and Training Plan was coordinated by the Ministry of Development Planning and Aid Coordination, through a consultative process among various stakeholder groups, including private sector, civil society and the government.
