Visiting members of the International Development Advisory Panel (IDASP), an independent group that provides advice to the New Zealand Foreign Minister on New Zealand’s Aid Programme have expressed their impression with the new Regional Eye Centre in Honiara.

Therese Walsh, Peter Kiely and Gill Greer visited the new Regional Eye Centre over the weekend.

Opened on 22 July, the Eye Centre is a result of collaboration by theNew Zealand Government, the Solomon Islands Government, and New Zealand NGO Fred Hollows Foundation.

Therese Walsh, one of the visitors said they are very impressed with the Eye Centre which provides Solomon Islands with world-leading facilities.

The Eye Centre will have a significant impact on avoidable blindness in the country by providing free eye care to all Solomon Islanders and doubling the number of sight-restoring surgeries able to be performed in the country.

It will also expand the services and eye health training for the Pacific region.

Run by the Solomon Islands Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS), the Regional Eye Centre is part of the National Referral Hospital and has been open to the public since 27 July 2015.
