S.I.N.C.W COMMENDS POLICE IN PUTTING GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE FIRST

The Solomon Islands National Council of Women (SINCW) commends the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force for putting gender-based violence as one of its priorities this year.

Council President Ella Kauhue said in a statement among its responsibilities as a law enforcement institution, police must also respond to and investigate complaints regarding gender-based violence.

She said the police should also ensure perpetrators are prosecuted and punished, collect data on the number of prosecutions and convictions at all levels in the country.

She adds, in order to combat violence against women and young girls in the country, the process has to involve women’s organisations, Government Ministries through their Gender Focal Points both at the National and Provincial level in the implementation of the Family Protection Act as well as other gender policies and strategies.

She said the Council is prepared to work closely with the Police and non-government organisations to combat violence against women in the country.

Meanwhile, the Council also takes into account the areas needing identification, such as relevant strategies to effectively address the situation of women in the provinces, especially women living in the remote areas.

The SINCW President said women in these remote areas need to feel the presence of the police in ensuring there is safety.
