S.I.N.U’s 2015 ACADEMIC YEAR DISTURBED

The academic year at the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) has been delayed because lecturers are threatening to go on strike, but SINU Vice Chancellor, Dr Glynn Galo is optimistic the matter will be resolved by the end of the week.

Classes for the University was scheduled to begin yesterday, but all three of the University’s campuses turned back students because of the issue.

Speaking to SIBC News, Dr Glynn Galo confirmed the potential strike action is in relation to staffing conditions but wouldn’t give any more details.

The Vice Chancellor also said the University is currently dealing with the issue.

“Well, there is a threat of possible industrial action but we are dealing with now as I speak to you, so we hope to resolve this. We’ve had a very productive meeting with the unions yesterday and I think we will come to some resolutions.”

In a separate interview with SIBC today, the President of the University’s Association for Lecturers, Samson Tahoniara says the issue is being dealt with.

“Right now we are dealing with it as we are in a meeting at the moment.”

SIBC News understands the Solomon Islands National University hopes to resolve the issue by the end of the week so classes can begin next Monday.
