Save the Children Solomon Islands office is currently implementing a seven month project in Northern and Eastern regions of Guadalcanal Province.
Funded by AusAID, the Disaster Risk Reduction, Education and Emergency Project aims to train teachers from certain schools within North and East Guadalcanal in disaster preparedness.
SIBC’s North Guadalcanal stringer, Dudley Gani reports, the seven schools covered under this project were recommended by the Guadalcanal Provincial Education Authority.
Project Manager, Nerol Vaikesa told Mr Gani, the project will involve training teachers in disaster preparedness, especially knowing what to do before, during and after a disaster.
“The project will involve training of teachers on disaster preparedness, what to do before, during and after disasters, setting up of Child Friendly Spaces, a temporary classroom in schools affected by disaster so as to maintain the continuity of schooling, conducting hazard mapping training to identify which areas in the school community is vulnerable to disaster and fourthly; to help schools with their disaster preparedness plans and Save the Children officers will be helping schools to conduct school drills in preparing students so that they know what to do in the event of a disaster.”
According to Ms Vaikesa, the project will be completed by mid December this year.
