The Royal Solomon Islands Police Commissioner is reminding drivers and passengers of travelling vehicles to wear seat belts.
Commissioner Frank Prendagast says wearing seatbelts could help prevent fatal accidents.
“We’ve had a couple of accidents recently where people aren’t wearing seat belts were very seriously injured or killed whereas people were wearing seat belts have been saved, so seat belts are very important and that’ll be something the police will pay attention to over the break.”
The Police Commissioner also discourage drivers to talk on their mobile phones while driving.
“We’ll also be paying attention to people driving and talking on their mobile phones. Driving while talking on a mobile phone is a very dangerous practice, it’s equivalent – that is in overseas – to driving while you’re drunk because you’re distracted, so it’s quite a common practice we’ve noticed and we’ll be taking steps to try and assure people of driving safely.”
Mr. Prendagast says these are traffic regulations Police will monitor, to ensure people are driving safely.
