Following yesterday morning’s Tsunami warning, the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation, SIBC, was broadcasting live from the National Disaster Management Office, NDMO, in Vavaya Ridge.
NDMO Director Loti Yates has been delivering important disaster-watch messages from the Vavaya Ridge broadcasting booth.
The Tsunami warning was cancelled at 9.50 am yesterday morning.
The warning was triggered by an undersea earthquake of magnitude 8.3 south south-east of Kirakira, Makira Province.
The main tsunami waves have passed all expected Solomon Islands locations.
The National Emergency Operation Centre, NEOC, however advises people near the coast or coastal waterways in the Choiseul, Shortland, Western, Isabel, Guadalcanal, Central, Malaita, Makira and Temotu to be aware that although the main tsunami threat has passed, small unusual waves and currents and abnormal tides may still affect some beaches, harbours and coastal waterways.
