SICCI Commends Minister Ricky Fuo’o for Championing Local Content in Infrastructure Development

The Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) acknowledges and commends the Solomon Islands Government, through the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development (MID), for its strong commitment to advancing local content in the infrastructure sector, creating opportunities for Solomon Islands construction companies – from SMEs to large businesses.

Speaking at the Pacific Infrastructure Conference 2025, Hon. Ricky Fuo’o, Minister for Ministry of Infrastructure and Development highlighted the importance of ensuring local contractors, communities, and workers are at the centre of infrastructure delivery for Solomon Islands.

The approach taken by the Ministry – contracting local companies to restore critical infrastructure lifelines such as the roads, bridges and public facilities has already transformed communities, reviving livelihoods, restoring access to schools and hospitals, and enabling farmers to bring their produce to markets and earn decent income to support their livelihoods.

SICCI agrees with the Minister’s remark that these infrastructures are not just projects but are lifeline for our Solomon Islands people, children, women and the entire communities.

The Chamber stressed that local content must remain central to infrastructure development, not only to deliver quality projects but also to build long-term national capacity in construction, project management, and maintenance.

SICCI would like to see infrastructure in Solomon Islands to be locally led, driven by our own people and companies. The private sector stands ready to partner with Government and development partners to make this vision a reality.

The recent passage of the National Building Standards Bill 2025 into Act provides an enabling framework to ensure consistent quality and safety, while opening more pathways for Solomon Islands businesses to meet international standards.

SICCI reaffirms its support for government efforts in policies formulation to further  grow local participation and ensure infrastructure investment translates into lasting benefits for Solomon Islanders.
